How to care for your t-shirt

Introduction

For Torre Del Viejo, ensuring the durability of their t-shirts is a top priority. Their fabrics are woven with the finest and most durable extra-long staple cottons on the market. However, proper care by the wearer also plays a vital role in extending the life of each garment. Follow this practical guide to ensure your t-shirts remain wardrobe staples for years to come.

How often should you wash your t-shirt?

Wash your t-shirts only when absolutely necessary. Reducing your washing machine use not only helps lower your carbon footprint but also extends the life of your clothes. Ideally, wash only when you have enough laundry to fill the machine. Often, simply hanging the t-shirt outdoors is enough to eliminate odors and allow you to wear it again.

It's also important not to overload the washing machine, as this prevents proper water circulation and excessive friction can damage clothes. However, make sure you have enough laundry to make the wash worthwhile.

  • Wash similar items together – Always separate clothes by color to prevent dye transfer. Don't mix white T-shirts with other colored ones, as they can lose their vibrancy.

  • Consider the different fabrics – Avoid washing delicate cotton t-shirts together with rougher garments, such as jeans or clothes with metal zippers and loose studs, as they could damage the fabric.

  • Turn your colored t-shirts inside out – washing them inside out helps preserve their original color.

  • Wash in cold water and check the label – Generally, wash your T-shirts at 30-40°C to prevent shrinkage and save energy. Always check the care label for instructions. For example, Sunspel 100% white cotton T-shirts should be washed on a delicate cycle at 30°C.

  • Use the correct amount of detergent – Using too little detergent won't clean your clothes properly, while using too much can trap dirt and odors in the fabric, leaving white T-shirts with a grayish or yellowish tint. Always follow the detergent manufacturer's instructions.

  • Reshape immediately – As soon as the wash cycle is finished, remove the t-shirt from the washing machine as soon as possible and reshape it while it's still damp. Shake it from the hem and gently stretch it first lengthwise, then crosswise, and finally through the sleeves, to restore its original shape.

  • Avoid using a dryer, as it can damage the fabric and cause shrinkage, yellowing, and pilling. It also consumes a lot of energy. Instead, hang it on a clothesline and let it air dry naturally.

How to remove stains from a white t-shirt

Spot-cleaning stains will allow you to wash your shirt less often. The golden rule is to act immediately. Absorb the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove excess liquid. Then, apply a little mild soap or detergent to the affected area and rub gently to remove as much of the stain as possible.

Alternatively, you can make a paste by mixing baking soda with a little water and applying it to the stained areas. Let it dry, then simply brush it off. For tougher stains, you may need to use a commercial stain remover, but avoid products containing chlorine-based bleach.

If the t-shirt is very dirty, you may need to soak it before putting it in the washing machine. Remember to always check the garment's care instructions.

How to iron, fold and store your t-shirt

Check the ironing instructions on the T-shirt's care label. Using too high a temperature can damage the fabric and leave marks, so it's best to use a low setting. Add steam or a little water before ironing to help smooth and set the fibers.

To store them, it's best to fold or roll them up and place them on a shelf or in a drawer, away from direct sunlight. Hanging them can cause the fabric to stretch or become misshapen, especially around the neck and shoulders. If you have no other option but to hang them, use wide hangers and insert them through the bottom of the shirt.

How to hand wash your t-shirt

Treat your t-shirt with extra care when handwashing. First, dissolve a small amount of detergent in a bowl or sink of warm water. Gently massage the t-shirt in the water, then rinse it thoroughly with clean, cold water.

It's also possible to wash it in cold water, which reduces the risk of shrinkage, damage, and wrinkles that can occur at higher temperatures. Additionally, some stains are less likely to spread or set in cold water. However, most detergents work best at lukewarm (not hot) temperatures, as this ensures the removal of oils and sweat and reduces the risk of discoloration.

What effect does dry cleaning have on your t-shirt?

Dry cleaning uses chemical solvents to remove dirt from garments, with minimal or no water. Before the process begins, the garment is inspected and any stains are pre-treated; then it is placed in a machine where it is agitated with the solvent.

This method can help remove certain types of stains and prevent shrinkage or deformation. However, it's worth noting that it's not always effective for removing stains specific to cotton, such as sweat or body oils. Unless the T-shirt is very dirty, a gentle wash at 30°C is usually more than enough.

How to prevent your t-shirt from shrinking

Cotton has a natural tendency to shrink, especially during the first few washes. To minimize this risk, always wash at 30°C. Using a tumble dryer is another major cause of shrinkage and deterioration, especially with finer cottons, so it's best to avoid it and let your T-shirt air dry.

What's the best way to clean your t-shirt without washing it?
